Another Day in the Town

Today since we did not have class, a group of us decided to check off another thing from our “to do while in Cape Town” list. We went to Charly’s bakery!! One of Oprah’s favorite bakeries of all time! It was a very modern, stylish, and almost fantasy like bakery with every type of dessert, pastry, and cake you can think of. It had quiches, sausage rolls, cupcakes, cookies, chocolate cake, brownies, and petit fours!! It was a great start to our morning, although a little bit of a sugar high!

Our days at Sir Lowry’s past just get better and better. The kids all remember your name and close relationships have been formed. I am one of the student leaders for arts in crafts. I just get the group going on different activities everyday. Today it was flower-making day! The kids went crazy wanting to make boutiques of flowers. We really work hard to make sure the kids are learning how to make them and not just making them for them. We also made bead bracelets, colored, and made chains out of construction paper. It is very hard because there are SO many kids compared to only 50 students. Rugby, dancing, hopscotch, netball, and little sally walker games were all going on outside as well.

Today was a holiday for the kids, so there were more kids than any other day this week!! After playing by the crush building, we all went to the school to see the mural and play with the kids in the field. The mural is looking amazing! All the kids want to help paint, but we are trying to only let the older teens help or things get out of control. I really don’t know how some of the kids have the energy that they do. They NEVER stop going going going. By the time we get on the bus all of us are dead tired! Every day the kids make a bigger and bigger difference in my life, and I hope that they are saying the same thing about us! I cannot believe tomorrow will be the last day! I am super excited for adventure week, but sad that our time with the kids will be ending tomorrow.

Much love from Cape Town,

Marjie Dickey
